The AR-15 rifle is the civilian version of the standard US Military Rifle, the M16/M16A1/M16A2. It pioneered the small-caliber cartridge in US military service rifles; even the WWII M1 Carbine was a .30 caliber weapon, albeit in a pistol-power round.

There was an initial resistance to the "Black Rifle" from "serious" riflemen as they could not see how it could compete with the old standards: the M1 Garand and M14. Could plastic and aluminum match up to walnut and steel?

Time has proven that they can, and do, handily. The AR-15 has become perhaps the most versatile rifle in history, with variations from shorty carbines to heavy barrel, long range match rifles. Its design, which separates the barrel, bolt and upper receiver from the fire control mechanism and the lower receiver, makes it possible for the AR-15 owner to swap uppers to meet any need.

Thus the AR-15 is the "tinkerer's delight," a rifle that has more personalities than Dr. Jekyll and Eve (of "All About Eve") combined. It can be deadly serious or seriously whimsical. The AR-15, more than any other rifle, allows its owner the full range of freedom of expression. If you can "tell a man by his dog," surely you'll be able to tell him by his AR-15! And the same goes for women, as well!
