Carefully, so as not to damage the barrel's rifling or the gauge, insert the the gauge into the muzzle as shown. Read the gauge directly from the side. Observe where the muzzle "falls" on the gauge.

0.0 indicates a .300” diameter bore, that is, .30 caliber, new, perfect.

0.5 is like new, .3005 caliber. Proper re-crowning will perfect the crown.

1.0 is excellent for a used barrel (.301 cal.) Re-crowning should make it like new.

1.5 is good (.3015 cal.). Proper re-crowning should make it excellent.

could you please explain what the timing block is on your web sight, and is one necessary to build a garand? thanks much!

The relationship among the bullet guide fulcrum, the op rod catch, op rod hooks and clip latch is complex. If it is not correct, a loaded clip will either not release the op rod catch at all when inserted and pressed into the magazine well, release the catch, only when excessive force is applied, or release the catch prematurely, causing a mess & possible injury as the bolt is propelled forward under the force of the op rod spring.

The timing gauge gives a precise measurement of the “timing,” that is, when in the process of inserting a clip the op rod catch is released. It is much more convenient than using a loaded clip of dummies (this testing should never be done with live ammo!), and gives a quantitative measure of the release point. If the release point is not within spec, you begin the corrective process by replacing the bullet guide.

I keep a timing gauge in my "gunshow kit" along with my muzzle wear gauge, TE gauge, & etc.

Since the publication of Scott Duff’s The M1 Garand Owner’s Guide, readers have asked for a book that would help guide them through the assembly of their M1 Garand. Ideally, such a book would impart the tips, tricks, pitfalls and “gotchas!” that experienced Garand enthusiasts and armorers have discovered and developed over the years.

This is that book. It goes beyond the military manuals in depth and scope, using words and pictures to clearly guide the reader through every operation required to assemble their Garand. You’ll learn the best and easiest ways to build your rifle. It won’t make you a Garand armorer, but it will make you a more knowledgeable owner. You’ll be able to do more with (and to) your rifle. Arms For The Nation (1994) - History of Springfield Armory produced longarms from Flintlock to M14.

Arms for the Nation provides a general history of 174 years of Springfield longarms in one treatise. Springfield Armory was established by Congress in April 1794 and supplied arms for the nation until its closure in April 1968. This book commemorates the bicentennial of the founding of the Armory and describes the longarms developed and produced there.

The introduction provides the reader with an overview of Springfield Armory, its establishment, industrial history, and the National Park Service administered Museum. The remainder of the book defines the eight epochal types of longarms produced by Springfield. A chapter is devoted to the Flintlock Musket, Percussion Musket, Rifle-Musket, Trapdoor Rifle, Krag Rifle, '03 Springfield Rifle, M1 Rifle, and M14 Rifle.
Each chapter describes that particular epochal arm, the various models, their production history, their service record, and significant examples displayed in the Springfield Armory Museum. A chart depicting production quantities, duration of manufacture, length, weight, and caliber is included along with photographs and drawings of each example.
